Résumé

Moroto I and Moroto II, Uganda, are Middle Miocene sites that have yielded fossil mammalian remains, notably of primates, proboscideans, small and large anthracotheres, hyracoids and rodents. New discoveries of hominoid teeth at both localities indicate that the diversity of this superfamily was greater than previously understood. Taxa currently recognised from the sites are Ugandapithecus gitongai, Afropithecus turkanensis, Nacholapithecus kerioi, Kalepithecus kogolensis sp. nov., Kogolepithecus morotoensis, Simiolus enjiessi, and Micropithecus leakeyorum. The Moroto deposits have also yielded a cercopithecid and a galagid, and there can be litttle doubt that, during the Middle Miocene, the region was appreciably more humid and well-wooded to forested than it is today. The primate fauna indicates correlation to East African Faunal Set IIIa (ca 17.0-16.5 Ma).
