Bradley, Conclusion L'émergence de la culture du coton en Arabie et en Afrique du nord-est, en-dehors des premières zones de domestication indienne ou africaine, est un exemple éloquent des défis environnementaux et des processus socio-techniques et économiques complexes accompagnant l'innovation agraire et textile. L'adoption de la culture du coton dans ces régions semble avoir bénéficié d'un effet de niche écologique et économique. D'une part, les spécificités agronomiques et techniques déjà maîtrisées au sein des oasis et des systèmes de culture nilotique ainsi que la disponibilité d'une main d'oeuvre domestique, ou d'une main d'oeuvre agricole moins sollicitée à certains moments de l'année, ont rendu possible le développement de cette plante d'origine tropicale arrivant à maturité pendant la saison estivale. Un examen détaillé des sources écrites évaluées à la lumière de données biologiques permet de penser que ces cotons antiques étaient très probablement cultivés sous forme d'arbre et qu'ils nécessitaient un apport en eau mesuré.
