Des oiseaux marins en ville : analyse comparée en milieu portuaire des représentations du goéland (Larus argentatus, Larus michahellis) en lien avec l’évolution des dynamiques écologiques des populations

Abstract : Gull (Larus argentatus, Larus michahellis) nesting in French cities started in the 1970s. Since then, municipal services constantly receive complaints from inhabitants who are annoyed by the presence of these birds which cause nuisance (noise, dirt…). In several cities, birds managing systems were set up in the 1990s. The thesis studies the social representations of gulls and their evolutions as part of a comparative analysis between two coastal towns and ports. It is a question of understanding how territories, seagull population dynamics and management systems participate in the construction of the social representations of gulls. The methodology used consists of an ethnological field survey and a documentary research in both historic and contemporary press and in literary works. The research results reveal that there is a diversity of relationships between humans and gulls in the cities (advocates, feeders, complainants…). In addition, the analysis reveals that the representations which inhabitants have of the seagull evolved since the installation of the bird in the cities: from a beautiful sea bird to an urban bird, aggressive, invasive and annoying bird. The ecological dynamics of gull populations and the contemporary press strongly influence the way inhabitants consider these animals. Finally, the bird crystallizes the fear of inhabitants about a changing world where they no longer recognize themselves. It’s an indicator of an ecological crisis substantially felt at human height and experienced locally in urban context.
