Des séjours linguistiques au service du rapprochement des peuples : les « foyers scolaires franco-allemands » dans l’entre-deux-guerres, une expérience d’éducation « co-nationale »

Abstract : Linguistic Summer Schools to Bring Two Peoples Together: the “Franco-German Schoolchildren’s Centres”, an Experience of “Co-National” Education in the Interwar Period — The Franco-German schoolchildren’s centres were original summer schools organised in the North of France and in Germany. This initiative, which was born between 1928 and 1929, mainly involved the academies of Lille and Dijon and the city of Berlin. It consisted in language classes, which were based on mutual teaching and learning between the schoolchildren from the two countries. The summer schools were first reserved for male pupils and then opened to girls from 1930. They provided an opportunity to compare the educational models of the two countries. The pacifist goals that underlay the project translated into joint commemorations of the victims of the Great War. In 1933, however, as the initiative was gaining momentum, the Nazi party came to power and caused disruption, leading to the eviction of the German manager of the program, Ernst Schwarz. Jérémie Dubois is an assistant professor at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne and a member of the research unit UR 2616 CERHIC.
