Humming beatboxing : the vocal orchestra within

Résumé

Humming beatboxing is a technique usedby beatboxers to give the impression of producingmultiple sounds synchronously. How this is achievedand what the differences are with regular beatboxingremains mostly unexplored from a scientific standpoint.Four beatboxers were recorded. Electromagneticarticulography was combined with acoustic, electroglottographic, and breathing measurements. The articulatory and breathing behaviors of threeboxemes (kick, hi-hat, rimshot) were compared betweena regular and a humming realization. Whenproduced as regular beatboxing, the trajectories ofthe tongue were consistent with a glottalic initiationmechanism and breathing behavior was related to theacoustic outcome. In contrast, for humming soundsthe breathing behavior was dissociated from articulationand acoustic outcome, suggesting that the initiationmechanism took place within the oral cavity andthe more posterior portion of the vocal tract did notparticipate in the production of those sounds. Articulatorytrajectories were consistent with a closure heldat the posterior region of the oral cavity. This suggeststhat in the humming technique the vocal tract isdivided into two sections: the oral cavity functionson its own to produce the rhythmic line, while themelodic line is produced in the laryngeal or pharyngealspaces and propagates through the nasal cavities.
